The Duchess of Devonshire – 18th century’s trendsetter

I just saw “the Duchess” and I was completely blown away by the gorgeous costumes and the hair pieces worn by the actors of the movie. Micahel O’Connor was the costume designer and designed a total of 27 dresses for Keira Knightley.

Back then women weren’t really allowed to do much. In the movie, you clearly sense the absence of power on part of the women during these times. They weren’t allowed to vote or work. Their only purpose in life seemed to be to bear children, especially male ones if the titles were in question. So the women expressed themselves thorough out the fashions they were wearing. But the Duchess of Devonshire was also known for being the leading light in fashion and setting trends for other aristocratic ladies who would show at parties and political rallies with foxtails in their hair.
