Ode to Malene Birger
One of my favorite Danish designers is Malene Birger. I probably own half of her summer 2009 collection by now and I’m not done yet. Every year she manages to blow me away with her fantastic collections. Malene has a way of combining the ideas of elegance and sassiness to her designs that seem to appeal to most women.
Following are a few words about the woman behind the brand “by Malene Birger”. After completing her degree at Denmark’s Design School in 1989, Malene became a designer. She worked for various Scandinavian brands as a fashion designer before she finally established her first company, Day Birger et Mikkelsen in 1997.
In 2003, when Malene started her own brand BY MALENE BIRGER, she caught the eye of the international press who was impressed by her talent. During the next few years Malene won numerous Design Awards and the prestigious Gazelle Award from a Danish Business newspaper Børsen, as the fastest growing company in Copenhagen.
Outside the design studio Malene is just as influential. She is a philanthropist and has contributed to charity as a special Ambassador to UNICEF Denmark.
